The Ludington & Scottville Branches of the Mason County District Library Offer Numerous Programs for Children & Families
All events at the Mason County District Libraries are free.
The Ludington and Scottville Branches of the Mason County District Library have many fun, free events scheduled in the coming month.
Fishing Poles Available for Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend
On Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th the Mason County District Libraries will make fishing poles available to any local resident or summer visitor with a library account for a three day loan period. Children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own bait. Fisherfolk are responsible for their own fishing licenses and compliance with Michigan DNR fishing rules and regulations.
Children of all ages are invited to meet Paleo Joe for a Dinosaur Adventure at the Ludington branch on Monday, June 11th at 1pm and at the Scottville branch on Wednesday, July 13 at 1pm. For more than 30 years Joseph Kchodl’s high-energy program has been bringing dinosaurs to life for students. His T-rex tooth, velociraptor skull, dinosaur puppets and variety of amazing fossils make children feel like they are actually there with the dinosaurs, millions of years ago. Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
Teddy Bear Picnic
Children of all ages are invited to a Teddy Bear Picnic on Wednesday, June 13th at 1pm at the Scottville branch. Children may bring a teddy bear or favorite toy to a picnic and hear stories on the library's front lawn. Children below the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult.
Teen Nerf War
Teens age 12-18 years are invited to join a Nerf War Thursday, June 14th from 6-8pm at the Ludington branch. Two teams enter. One team leaves. A limited amount of nerf guns and ammo will be distributed while supplies last. This event is for teens only.
Children of all ages are invited to a Summerween Event on Monday, June 18th at 1pm at the Ludington branch and at the Scottville branch on Wednesday, June 20th at 1pm. Get treats and tricks when you wear your favorite costume for summer Halloween! Beware the Jack-O-Melon and have a spooky fun time. Children below the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
CupCake Camp is coming to the Ludington branch on Wednesday, June 20th from 2-3pm. You can buy cupcakes to share, bake cupcakes to share, enter your sweeties in the competition, or just EAT CUPCAKES! If you are sharing cupcakes, your creations must be registered by NOON on Tuesday, June 19th. Registration forms are available at the Mason County District Libraries in Ludington and Scottville, and on the library’s website. Categories for competition are Most Unique Ingredients, Ludington or Mason County Theme, or Best Kid’s Design. Children under age 11 must be accompanied by an adult.
Summer Fun at the Library
Summers are so much fun at the Mason County District Libraries, the kids may not want to go to the beach! The Summer Reading Program is for kids of all ages, with Read to Me for kids up to eight years, Independent Readers for those 5-13 years, and Teen Readers for 11-18 years. Incentives include book bags, local merchant gift certificates, books, and small toys. Just 20 minutes of reading a day!
During the summer months there are also weekly crafts for kids ages six years and older, Science Camps in July and many special programs as well as the ongoing weekly programs.

Every holiday brings a special celebration to the libraries. There are parties for Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, Easter, Earth Day, Halloween, and Christmas...always fun and always free!

About the Mason County District LibrariesFour years of fundraising and seven months of construction has produced the beautiful new children's wing to the Mason County Library in Ludington. The Keith Wilson Children's Center was formally dedicated on May 18, 2012. The new wing adds over 5,300 square feet to the library, which now offers a Story Time and Sailboat Play Area, West Shore Bank Multi-Purpose Room and Craig R. Rasmussen Outdoor Activity Area which is enclosed by a fence.
Children simply love the Mason County District libraries in Ludington and Scottville. They're kid-friendly, and have activities all year for children of all ages. The mission of the library is children's literacy...encouraging children to read by making it fun and enjoyable. Their theme is "Just Imagine," allowing kids to engage their minds and curiosity of the world around them.
The Mason County District Library is so much more than books...it's a fun place for kids to learn and explore, while increasing children's literacy.
